Oncology Translational Biomarker Scientist

Position

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and implementation of biomarker strategies to support Nurix’s clinical studies targeting protein fate for cancer targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Working with discovery teams and the development organization, the translational biomarker scientist will be responsible for biomarker identification and characterization in preclinical studies, implementation of state of the art biomarker methods, oversight of assays in clinical development and biomarker data analysis and interpretation to guide early clinical development.
Specific responsibilities include:

  • Design and deliver biomarker strategies to enable informed and efficient early clinical development
  • Identify candidate pharmacodynamic and predictive biomarkers based on target biology, drug mechanism of action, and patient population
  • Collaborate with project teams, external investigators and contract research organizations to evaluate candidate biomarkers in nonclinical models and patient samples and select optimal assays for clinical evaluation
  • Drive efforts to evaluate and implement state of the art technologies for clinical biomarker studies
  • Oversee development, qualification, and execution of innovative assays for clinical biomarker analysis internally and with contract research organizations
  • Monitor ongoing biomarker assay quality and provide scientific review of data/reports
  • Coordinate closely with Clinical Operations to develop clinical trial laboratory manuals, train clinical site staff, monitor sample collection and manage relationships with clinical trial site contacts
  • Author relevant sections of clinical documents, regulatory submissions and publications
  • Evaluate, interpret, and communicate clinical biomarker data to guide project decisions
  • Function as an internal expert in oncology biomarkers and contribute to scientific discussions and engagement with key opinion leaders in the field

Education and Skills Requirements

  • PhD degree in a relevant scientific area with 8+ years’ experience in translational aspects of drug development
  • Training and/or experience in Immunology, Immuno-oncology, and/or Cancer Biology
  • Experience in assay development, qualification and implementing biomarker assays on diverse platforms is desirable
  • Previous clinical trial experience in the setting of translational biology desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential in this collaborative work environment
  • Ability to flourish in a fast-paced environment

The successful candidate will support early drug discovery efforts in the area of inflammation and IO. Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in immunology or related field (cellular or in vivo); Scientist II level requires similar background with additional post-doctoral training and industry experience
  • Expertise in autoimmunity, immuno-oncology, inflammation or related fields
  • Expertise in immune cell activation and signaling
  • Experience isolating and interrogating the function of primary human and mouse immune cells (e.g. T cells, NK cells, antigen presenting cells) in vitro and in vivo is desired
  • Hands-on experience in development, optimization and execution of immune and cellular assays applying multiple techniques including primary cell isolation, tissue culture, ELISA, FACS, Western and multiplexing technologies (e.g. Luminex, Quantigene)
  • Expertise with flow cytometer based profiling of immune cells required
  • Ability to conceive, design and execute hypothesis-testing experiments that directly contribute to project success is essential

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, or related field with 6+ years industry experience (or Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of industry experience)
  • Strong background with hands-on experience in development, optimization and execution of various biochemical binding and activity assays including FP and FRET
  • Prior experience in small molecule screening, liquid handling instruments and data analysis
  • Familiarity with general biochemical and molecular biology techniques including protein expression and purification to support downstream mechanism of action and target occupancy readouts for drug candidates
  • Previous experience in ubiquitin biology is a plus
